Showcasing EAA’s Values

I am writing this message after returning from the January 2008 EAA Leadership conference.  This is one of the best conferences including a wide range of activities designed to bolster local chapter efforts in a wide range of programs and activities. Workshops and smaller group sessions were held on chapter fund raising; engaging youth in aviation; chapter clubhouses/hangars; and other subjects.

My foremost contribution was fundraising.  I shared photos of airplane toy boxes and brought the Rusty Wallace Airplane Toy Box for show and tell.  Ideas from other chapter leaders were building airplane toy box playgrounds in the community, making a “Mr. Potato Head” type learning activity at chapter clubhouse with the different shapes of wings and tails, and having famous people sign toy boxes and sell them on EBay.leader meeting

While we are not in the association business to make buckets of money, we need to take in more than we spend.  At January’s local chapter meeting I told you I will lead the fund raising efforts for Chapter 1452.

Tom Poberenzy addressed nearly 30 of us chapter leaders.  He talked about the common bond being Aviation and Oshkosh is the passion that keeps people alive in aviation.  Some old-timers have said Oshkosh is too big.  Tom’s vision was to make Oshkosh the Best, not the biggest.  Tom is leading 4 EAA initiatives.
Homebuilts continue strong @ 20 % of GA
Oshkosh 24/7 365 days of the year of providing innovation and education
Young Eagles; Youth outreach and higher standards of EAA facilities and lodge
Light Sport / Sport Pilot now average cost at $100K.  More demand and more volume will bring prices down to $80K, then $60K, etc.

We watched a brand new unreleased high definition video promoting EAA’s new logo (see new logo on eaa.org) the “Sprit of Aviation” narrated by Harrison Ford. My highlight was having lunch with Paul Poberenzy in his workshop.  I spent 10 minutes alone with 85 year old Paul discussing the values he has instilled into aviation and the impact he has had on my own family and local chapter.  His message is that airoplanes bring us together but, it’s the people that keep the passion alive.  I will never forget and always treasure standing at workshop bar reminiscing with Paul Poberenzy.   I came back from the leadership conference learning 4 significant points.

1) EAA will maintain the sprit of volunteerism and shared learning that created the organization.
30 chapter leaders attended this event.  We had social time and then group introductions were facilitated and lead by a half dozen rabidly passionate chapter staff, assisted by scores of other EAA volunteers, and wonderfully supported by the EAA leadership.  EAA values new and creative chapter efforts and EAA was excited to here we are expanding Young Eagles program at the grass-roots level.

2) EAA will offer products and services that are world-class, relevant and keeps the passion of aviation alive.
We took tours of premier Oshkosh sites including Kermit Weeks Hangar and with After Hours Museum Tour with close up looks of extensive books, photos, videos, personal letters and airplane projects going back to day one in Paul and Audrey’s basement in 1953.  Paul saved everything.  He has two personal museums in his house and the EAA Museum has artifacts unmatched anywhere in the world and rivaled only by perhaps the Smithsonian.

3) EAA wants to cooperate and align with other like minded organizations.
Our new alliance with United Way to serve our community and EAA was very thrilled with our alliance with EAA Central Chapters of Iowa.  The notion of combining events, advertising and fundraising is destined to be a successful activity.

4) EAA wants to be exceedingly welcoming to people new to aviation and wants to maintain a high performance aviation presence globally and locally.
I met chapter presidents from all over the country and shared many ideas that we can put in practice to maintain our success at chapter 1452.  There are too many programs and activities, successful projects, Youth Engagement, recruitment and new participation ideas to list in this newsletter.  We have formed new volunteer groups at Chapter 1452 to help manage ISU Cyclone April Event, a progressive Hangar Tour at Ames Airport, initiate an ADOPT-A-Highway program, and develop a WWII dbase of local Vets to speak at 1452.

I believe the EAA leadership conference showcased EAA’s values at the very highest level.  My personal thanks to Steve Buss our Young Eagles Director and now our new Chapter Director.   I thank the entire EAA conference team.  I’m confident that Steve and his team are ready to provide the same gold-standard leadership events in the future.

Saturday July 7th Fly-In was a great success!
July 7 fly-in
We had a breezy, but beautiful day for our first fly-in event.  In all, I believe we had 7 aircraft in attendance to join us for a casual morning of kicking tires and going for rides.

Ron Hodges was the official test pilot climbing in for rides in Jason's Challenger II and Bob Olson's Ercoupe.
